what we do

Onesimus Ministry is dedicated to sharing the love of Christ with incarcerated individuals and their families by providing prison outreach, counseling through digital and phone services, and prevention programs—all with the goal of restoring broken lives, healing families, and building stronger, faith-based communities.

Jail and Prison Ministry

We directly visit prisons throughout California to hold worship services with inmates, sharing in praise, prayer, and God's Word. This ministry is conducted 3 to 4 times a year, serving as a way to spread the gospel and provide spiritual fellowship to the incarcerated.

* Individual Visitation Ministry

This ministry involves individual, one-on-one visits to inmates in California's prisons and county jails. We offer comfort, evangelize, and provide counseling and spiritual guidance to help them turn their lives around. We visit county jails every Friday and prisons on a rotating schedule according to the mission's calendar.

* Document and Outreach Ministry

We deliver the gospel and communicate with inmates through various forms of correspondence and outreach. Our key activities include:

  • Regular Publications: We produce and distribute approximately 450 copies of our quarterly newsletter in both Korean and English.

  • Spiritual Literature Support: We donate Bibles and various religious books to prisons nationwide and send them directly to inmates.

  • Personal Correspondence: We engage in personal counseling through letters with inmates and assist with the drafting of supporting letters for submission to legal authorities.

  • 'GettingOut' Program: We use the "GettingOut" phone and visitation platform to share scripture and provide counseling via text messages.

Onesimus School of Theology

* Mission and History

Our Bible College was founded in 2001 with the mission of effectively delivering God's Word to inmates. We are an educational institution officially authorized by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE). We operate a Bible certificate program (42 credits) and a Bachelor of Theology program (126 credits), both provided completely tuition-free through a full scholarship system.

* Educational System

Inmate students receive their course materials via mail. After studying, they complete their assignments and mail them back to the college. This system allows them to focus on their studies without the need for outside help.

* Ministry Outcomes

Through our systematic theological training, many long-term inmates are growing into ministers within the prison system. Furthermore, after their release, we commission them to return to their home countries and serve as missionaries. Currently, approximately 100 Korean inmates are enrolled along with other English-speaking students from various ethnic backgrounds.

* Academic Support and Encouragement

To encourage academic excellence and good conduct, the college awards a small number of exemplary students with an Academic Achievement Award each year. We also provide support by drafting supporting letters for students upon request, which they can submit to correctional authorities.

New Life Ministry

* Post-Release Ministry Support for Repatriated Individuals

Our ministry assists dedicated inmates who have completed their theological studies with us to continue their work for God even after they are released and repatriated to their home countries. We provide collaborative support for these ministers in countries such as Korea, Mexico, Haiti, and Colombia.

  • Local Ministry Support: We provide them with a place of worship to evangelize in their local communities. We also support them until they become self-sufficient by providing vehicles and other supplies. Additionally, we support special evangelistic events to help these ministers maintain stable ministries.

  • Spiritual Training: We offer regular training programs to help local ministers continue to grow spiritually.

* Resettlement Support for Those Repatriated to Korea

This ministry is dedicated to helping our brothers and sisters who have been repatriated to Korea successfully settle into their new environment.

  • Spiritual and Life Support: We connect them with local churches to support their spiritual lives, help them find jobs, and provide ongoing guidance to ensure they do not stray from their faith.

  • Housing and Resettlement Support: We provide stable housing and work with them to adapt to legal and environmental issues in Korean society.

Youth Crime Prevention and Rehabilitation Ministry

Our organization is dedicated to reducing recidivism and supporting individuals in becoming healthy members of society. We achieve this through a variety of programs that span from youth crime prevention to the reintegration of adults after their release from prison.

  • Youth Crime Prevention: We intervene with at-risk youth through camps, counseling, and our own Choice Program to guide them toward a positive path.

  • Drug Offender Rehabilitation: In accordance with Proposition 36 (California law), we connect drug offenders with professional rehabilitation centers to help them recover. A key part of this ministry involves collaborating with organizations like Teen Challenge and the Salvation Army to establish healing communities.

  • Post-Release Reintegration Support: We facilitate the successful reintegration of individuals back into society by connecting them with Sober Living Homes and Transition Homes, such as Phoenix House and Victory Outreach. We provide practical support including housing referrals and job placement assistance.

  • Crime Prevention Program Management: We actively participate in community crime prevention efforts by hosting our own camps and Crime Prevention Symposiums.
